In the last few days, weeks, maybe even months, I’ve had this same argument over and over. The conversation may be a little different each time, but it always comes back to the same thing. I say abortion kills a human fetus, or z/e/f, or baby, and they come back denying it. It’s time to refute this myth pro-choicer’s believe.
One of the conversations started with the tweet below.
To which @Jinfurei responded:
This started because I said “Abortion kills a human being”, which is a whole nuther debate! @Jingurei responded by saying “Abortion results in a dead fetus. That is all.” It got really interesting when I responded “At least you admit #abortionkills”, because @Jingurei denies abortion kills a fetus, a z/e/f, a baby, or whatever.
First let’s define the word ‘kill’. Merriam Webster defines KILL as “to deprive of life : cause the death of“. This of course is not the only definition, but it is the first one on the list.
I’ve been debating pro-aborts for awhile, and although they still surprise me from time to time, this belief didn’t surprise me at all. Why? Because in order to be killed, one must first have life. Pro-aborts deny a fetus is alive, so they can deny killing it. Make sense?
So back to Merriam Webster we go to define ALIVE: “having life : not dead or inanimate”. Again, this is not the only definition, but it is the first one on the list. If you know how pro-aborts think, you know they will question “having life”. So lets dig a little deeper.
Merriam Webster defines LIFE as: “the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body“
So ‘having life’, is having the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body.
What would distinguish a live body from a dead body? Do EMT’s measure brain waves when determining if someone is alive at the scene of an accident? No, of course they don’t. They listen for a heartbeat. It’s the heartbeat that is the distinguishing factor in whether someone is alive, or dead. A fetuses heart typically begins to beat at 21 days gestation. Therefore it’s indisputable that a fetus is alive.
@Jingurei is not the only one who denies this fact. @RealtinConnor does also. In response to my agreeing (re-tweeting) with another Twitter user on @RealtinConnor’s not knowing when life begins, he responded with this.
And much the same as I did with @Jingurei, I responded to @RealinConnor with this:
And he responded:
If you cease to continue living, you’re dead. It’s pretty black and white. But pro-aborts care more about their quality of life, than about life itself. @RealtinConnor’s reasoning is mind boggling.
Read this from the bottom up:
People like @Jingurei and @RealtinConnor, go to great lengths denying that abortion kills a human fetus. Again, they deny a fetus is alive, so they can in turn deny killing it. All this to protect a woman’s ‘right to choose’ to kill her baby.
The debate really isnt that difficult. And for that reason alone, is what causes the difficulty. Sounds silly, but let me explain.
The entire debate boils down to “what does abortion do?”
According to biology and embryology textbooks and geneticists, from the very point of conception and new and genetically unique human life begins. This is a medical fact. At conception it is human, and it is alive.
Taking the life of an innocent human being is morally wrong.
Abortion takes the life of an innocent human being.
Therefore, abortion is morally wrong.
This is why the debate is so difficult. The conscience can scream awfully loud. For this reason every effort to dehumanize what is in the womb needs to be made.
The only difference between a zygote, embryo, fetus, newborn, todler, adolescent, teen, adult is time and level of development. But newborns are not less human than adults simply because they are less developed. Other than the location (in womb or out) there is no difference in human-ness, only maturity.
Thank you John. You’re right, it’s not difficult to debate. What’s difficult (or impossible), is getting them to admit the truth.
What I thought was strange about this particular discussion is the focus on “killing”. That the actual life begins at conception is not medically up for debate. That has been known for a long time. The debate usually hinges on whether it is a human being, or whether it is a “person”. Abortion causing a thing to die is really uncontroversial, the controversy is usually on what dies.
The debate changes depending on who you talk to. They still argue about the fetus being a human being, and about whether or not the fetus is a person, even if not granted legal personhood. They will tell you life begins at birth, even if science says it’s at conception. They define the value of life as quality of life, not life itself.
In the end, abortion does kill a human fetus, and they know as more people understand that fact, less people will support abortion.
all the latest polls show that 60+% of Americans believe abortion should be illegal in most or all circumstances. And thankfully states are passing more and more restrictive laws. I have links to stats if you want them.
Thanks John, I’ve seen some the stats. Please feel free to post them here anyway, it may be something I haven’t actually seen, or someone else for that matter. America is slowly coming back to it’s senses.. or that’s the way I see it anyway.
